Travel is medicine

Exploring Wellness and Healing Through Travel.

"Can travel be medicine?"

Have you ever felt the need to break free from your daily routine, to step out of the familiar and immerse yourself in something entirely new? Imagine if this urge to explore could also serve as a powerful means of healing and personal growth. Welcome to the idea of travel as medicine, a concept that invites you to see the world—and yourself—in a new light.

Why Travel Can Heal?

Travel isn't just about going to new places; it’s about opening your mind and heart to new experiences, that can have a profound and lasting impact that can shift and change outdated beliefs that may be holding you back in your life, usually leading to suffering, depression, pain, anxiety and more. Here’s how travel can be a transformative force in your life:

1. Breaking Free from Routine

Routine can sometimes feel like a cage, limiting your creativity and joy. Travelling offers a refreshing break from the monotony, giving you a chance to reset and rejuvenate. Think about how you might feel after a spontaneous weekend trip to a nearby coastal town or a month-long adventure across a foreign country. These breaks can spark new ideas and renew your zest for life.

2. Cultural Immersion

Exploring different cultures is like opening a treasure chest of new perspectives and wisdom. Each culture has its own unique way of life, customs, and traditions that can enrich your understanding of the world. Picture yourself being involved in a traditional tea ceremony in Japan or wandering through the colorful markets of Morocco. These experiences can broaden your horizons and deepen your empathy for other customs and ways of life in the world.

3. Connection with Nature

There’s something profoundly healing about spending time in nature. Whether it's letting the mind drift into the calming waves of a secluded beach, the majestic peaks of a mountain range, or the serene stillness of a forest, nature has a way of restoring balance. Perhaps hiking through the verdant trails of New Zealand or meditating beside a tranquil lake in Finland would create a new connection for you to expereince yourself, through. These natural retreats could help you find inner peace and clarity.

4. Physical Activity and Adventure

Travel often involves activities that promote both physical and mental well-being. Engaging in hiking, swimming, or cycling not only boosts your physical health but also releases endorphins that enhance your mood. Think about the thrill of rock climbing in Colorado or surfing in Bali. These adventures could help build resilience and confidence, offering you guidance and an opportunity to overcome personal challenges in a new way. What we learn when we challenge ourselves in activities like this, we can bring back to enhance our everyday lives. Giving us new resources with which to draw on, when needed.

5. Mindfulness and Presence

Traveling to new places heightens your senses and encourages mindfulness. Being present in the moment, savoring new experiences, and taking in the beauty around you can be incredibly therapeutic. Activating all our senses in this way can help us to learn more about ourselves and the wider world around us. Picture yourself sitting in a quaint café in Paris, sipping coffee while watching the world go by, or walking through the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, feeling a deep connection to history. These mindful moments can leave a lasting impact on your well-being and open up new possibilities or portals to explore in your life.

How to Embrace Travel as Medicine

To make the most of your healing journey, consider these tips:

  • Set Intentions: Before you travel, think about what you hope to gain from your experience. Whether it’s relaxation, adventure, or self-discovery, having a clear intention can make your journey more meaningful.

  • Stay Present: Practice mindfulness by fully immersing yourself in each moment. Take time to savor new experiences, whether it’s through journaling, photography, or simply soaking in your surroundings. Take your time and try not to schedule too much in.

  • Be Flexible: Embrace the unexpected and be open to unplanned adventures. Sometimes, the best experiences come from spontaneous decisions, which can only be had if we leave room for this by not over itinerising.

  • Connect with Locals: Engage with the local community and learn from their ways of life. Building these connections can enrich your travel experience and create lasting memories.

  • Prioritise Self-Care: Travel can be physically demanding, so ensure you take care of your health. Stay hydrated, rest well, and nourish your body with healthy foods.

The writer of this Blog post; Kate Hanssen, an experienced Ayurveda Practitioner, Counsellor, and Wellness Expert, loves to offer and encourage transformative travel experiences. Her journey began with a personal experience that changed her life and led her to found Reconnection Tours, a business that provides its clients guidance on booking travel that will have a profound and life changing impact. Kate believes "Travel is medicine."

Kate's Life-Changing Experience

On April 25th, 2015, Kate found herself amidst the vibrant chaos of Kathmandu’s Thamel district, sipping lassi at The Olive Tree café. The tranquility of the moment was shattered when the earth beneath her feet began to tremble. The devastating earthquake that struck Nepal that day changed many lives, including Kate's. As she clung to the pillars of the café, surrounded by panicked voices and crashing debris, she felt a deep instinct to seek safety.

Navigating the narrow alleyways of Thamel, Kate found herself driven by a sense of urgency and determination. Amidst the aftershocks and uncertainty, a newfound sense of community emerged, uniting strangers in a shared journey of resilience and compassion. This harrowing experience sparked a deep sense of purpose within her. Together with her dear friend, and now husband, Govin, they embarked on a mission of healing and renewal. Through gathering a community of locals and tourists they helped channel $50,000 of AID to surrounding communities. As time went on during that year of living in another world a long way from everything she knew and loved, what could have been a traumatic experience was a transforming one. Kate discovered her love of travel, learning and supporting local communities, through cross cultural sharing. Kates own mental health improved through this experience and her whole perspective on life changed dramatically. Kate feels that she is more of herself after the experience. After spending a whole year in Nepal and discovering so many things about herself and the country she and her husband founded Reconnection Tours to share their passion for Nepal and transformative travel experiences. For Kate this kind of Travel experience was the missing piece in her healing tool box.

Reconnection Tours was founded with the mission of providing transformative journeys that transcend ordinary travel experiences. These tours are designed to foster deep connections with cultures, communities, and the natural world, promoting self-discovery and spiritual awakening.

You can read more about Kates journey in her book "Following Dharma" available anywhere books are sold.
